Scott and the Dragon

About

What does it mean to “Know The Cosmos”? That’s an extremely difficult, yet absolutely wonderful question to ask. One must first define the Cosmos.

The term Cosmos comes from the Greek word kosmos, which was used to describe the order of all of everything. It is the science that permeates the Universe. It is absolutely everything that we can detect, observe, study, appreciate and enjoy.

My name is Scott Lewis. My hope is that I can have you join me as I travel through the many amazing corridors of science to help us all better Know the Cosmos.

I am an astronomer who has always had a love affair with the sky along with an affinity for communicating with others. I’ve decided to return to school in order to obtain my degrees in Astronomy, with a focus on Astrophysics and Cosmology. I have completed an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) in the summer of 2012, as well as developing the research topic which was approved for funding by NASA & CalSpace to detect X-Ray photons in the atmosphere with a high-altitude balloon.

On top of my course load in the honor’s program, I am involved in the Planetary Astronomy courses, providing supplemental instruction to the students, lead Study Mentor sessions for Stellar Astronomy courses as well as being a mentor for STEM major students.

I’m also involved with a fantastic Citizen Science site CosmoQuest, which is utilizing data from multiple NASA missions in order to better understand our Solar System. Acting as Broadcast Producer and Forum Czar, I get many opportunities to engage with the public in the hopes to excite them with a universe they’re able to explore. We hold many Google+ Hangouts On Air broadcasts every week, and the recorded versions can be found on the CosmoQuest YouTube Channel. On top of all of my work at CosmoQuest, I also perform duties as an intern for The Planetary Society, working on their Content Management System for the website.

I have been very fortunate to be involved with a fantastic Citizen Science group called CosmoQuest as a member of their Education and Public Outreach team and Producer for many of our Google+ Hangout On Air broadcasts.
